WILL BANISTER GOES TO HOLLYWOOD
I f you ’ re heading to the cinema to see Clint
Eastwood ’ s latest movie , ‘ Cry Macho ’, make sure you ’ re not late or held up getting your super massive nacho combo or you might miss the opening song by Will Banister . Yep , we ’ ve been singing his praises since before he wowed Wembley , but now The Man With No Name and Harry Callaghan himself is a fan . Also of interest to country fans is that the film stars Dwight Yoakam as a central character .
Banister ’ s song , Find A New Home , was written by Grammy-winning film composer Mark Mancina especially for the project which is set around the story of a washedup rodeo star bonding with the son of his former boss ( Yoakam ) as they travel from Mexico to Texas .
Consider it serendipity or blind luck – we prefer deserved recognition – but rather than recruit a major name to perform the song the makers put out some feelers for someone with an authentic country voice from the area in which it is set . Home to Banister is Portales , New Mexico , a mere hop and a skip from the Texas border and his name
ended up in the mix . He was sent the track and recorded a ‘ demo ’ vocal at home thinking it was for an indie movie with a view to heading to California to record it properly if they liked it .
Word has it that Eastwood liked it so much he kept the original vocal , saying , “ That guy ’ s voice is from the top of those speakers down to your feet ,” but still flew the traditionalist out to meet Eastwood in Carmel , California .
Banister , whose last album was 2020 ’ s Everything Burns says , “ To hear my voice at the opening of ‘ Cry Macho ’ was such an honour ” and of the film legend , “ He is as down to earth as I thought he would be .”
Banister ’ s own single , Out Of Her Mind , has also just been released .
