Please recycle this magazine The Dixie Chicks have reacted to the sweeping cultural changes brought about by Black Lives Matter by dropping the ‘Dixie’ from their name. The trio will now be known as ‘The Chicks’. Natalie Maines, Emily Strayer and Martie Maguire announced on their website that, “We want to meet this moment.” The re-branding falls in line with the current desire of artists to disassociate themselves with anything that could be construed as ‘Southern’ and comes as the Goodbye Earl hit-makers release their first new music as a trio for fourteen years with their new album Gaslighter and a new video for March, March (from the album) that features footage from the Black Lives Matter protests as well as historical footage of uprisings from the Suffragette movement to Civil Rights and climate change. The Chicks famously saw their country career nosedive when they criticised then- President George W. Bush over his handling of Iraq from the stage of London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire. Interestingly, The Chicks checked with a New Zealand duo of the same name before going ahead with the new moniker saying, “A sincere and heartfelt thank you goes out to ‘The Chicks’ of NZ for their gracious gesture in allowing us to share their name. We are honored to co-exist together in the world with these exceptionally talented sisters. Chicks Rock!” Things haven’t gone quite so smoothly for Lady A who recently dropped the ‘Antebellum’ from their name because of its connection with a pre-Civil War south. Just when it appeared that they had reached an amicable settlement with Seattle blues singer Anita White who has performed as ‘Lady A’ for ‘decades’ it transpires that the Nashville trio are now taking legal action against White following a new demand from White and her team for a 4 cmp - AUGUST 2020
