Cottonwood Connections September 2026

September 2026

It starts with our communities.

Our agents listen to the questions, needs and challenges people are experiencing. A producer may ask about a new crop disease or an emerging pest. A homeowner may have a plant problem that doesn't have an obvious answer. A community may be struggling with housing, childcare, workforce development or another issue that doesn't have a simple solution. Those questions don't just stay in our office.

We take what we're hearing to K-State.

Because our agents work directly with people in our communities, we have a unique perspective on what is happening on the ground. We can tell K-State specialists and researchers, “This is what we're hearing. This is what producers are experiencing. This is what families are asking about. This is where our communities are struggling.” That information is valuable. It helps K-State identify what needs to be studied, what research may be needed, what resources should be developed and where solutions are needed. In other words, Extension doesn't just deliver research. We help shape the questions that research needs to answer.

Then the cycle continues. As K-State develops research, information and resources, Extension brings that knowledge back to our communities. We help translate research into practical information that people can use to make decisions, solve problems and create opportunities.

And then we listen again. New questions emerge. New challenges develop. What we learn from working with people leads to new conversations with K-State. The cycle continues.

That is the connection. Our communities help K-State understand what is happening in the real world. K-State provides the research and expertise that can help address those challenges. Extension connects the two.

That is why I like the extension cord analogy so much. An extension cord doesn't have to be the source of the power to be useful. Its purpose is to make the power accessible where it is needed.

That is what I see every day in Cottonwood Extension District. We connect K-State to our communities. We connect communities back to K-State. We connect questions to research, research to answers, and answers to action.

Listening. Learning. Researching. Sharing. Acting.

That is the continuous cycle of connection. And that is the power of Extension.

District Director's Corner – The Connection Matters

A few months ago, I wrote about a question I hear from time to time: “Why do we need Extension when we have Google?” I won't revisit that entire discussion here, but one of the points I made was that Extension is about much more than simply providing information. It is about connection.

In another article, I used the analogy of an extension cord to describe what K-State Extension does. An extension cord takes power from one place and makes it available where it is needed. In many ways, that is exactly what Extension does.

But the connection isn't one-way. In fact, it is better understood as a continuous cycle. The graphic shown here illustrates what happens every day within Cooperative Extension.
