As the mowing season winds down, it’s easy to park the lawn mower in the shed and forget about it until spring. However, taking a little time now to maintain your lawn equipment will save you frustration, and money, when the next growing season rolls around.
Here are some simple fall maintenance steps to keep your equipment in top shape:
1. Clean the Equipment
Grass clippings, dirt, and debris can build up under mower decks and on blades. A thorough cleaning prevents rust and helps equipment run more efficiently. Be sure to disconnect the spark plug before cleaning the underside of a mower.
2. Sharpen and Balance Blades
A sharp blade makes a cleaner cut, reducing stress on your lawn in the spring. If you remove the blade for sharpening, check its balance before reinstalling to prevent engine vibration.
3. Change the Oil and Air Filter
Just like a car, small engines need fresh oil to run smoothly. Replacing the air filter improves airflow and keeps dust and debris out of the engine.
4. Drain or Stabilize the Fuel
Fuel left sitting in tanks over the winter can break down and cause starting problems. Either drain the fuel system completely or add a stabilizer to prevent varnish and gumming.
5. Check Belts, Cables, and Tires
Look for wear and tear on belts and cables, and replace as needed. Inflate tires to the recommended pressure so they are ready to go in spring.
6. Store in a Dry, Protected Space
Moisture is the enemy of metal parts. Store equipment in a clean, dry shed or garage. Covering machines with a tarp or breathable cover offers added protection.
Taking time this fall to service your mower, trimmer, and other lawn tools will extend their life and make your spring start-up smooth and trouble-free. Your lawn, and your wallet, will thank you!
