October 2025
District Director Notes - Jay Harris
Fall has officially arrived in the Cottonwood District, and with it comes a busy season of programs, planning, and new opportunities to serve our communities. As your District Director, I am continually inspired by the dedication of our staff, volunteers, and partners who make Extension’s work possible in Barton and Ellis Counties.
This fall, our Family and Community Wellness agents are focusing on financial literacy, healthy living, and Medicare counseling during open enrollment. These programs are designed to provide practical support for individuals and families in our district, addressing both short-term needs and long-term well-being.
Our Agriculture and Natural Resources agents continue to bring timely resources to producers as harvest moves forward and as planting begins for the next wheat crop. From crop updates to soil health strategies, their expertise is helping local producers make informed decisions during this critical time of year.
Our 4-H Youth Development agents are also busy this fall as 4-H enrollment for the next program year begins October 1. They will be working with current and prospective families to encourage youth to get involved in 4-H, opening doors for leadership, learning, and lifelong skills.
Horticulture programming is in full swing, with fall lawn and garden education opportunities available and support for Master Gardener projects across the district.
I also want to share an exciting opportunity to support Extension locally. The Cottonwood District has partnered with the Heartland Community Foundation to establish the K-State Extension Cottonwood District Community Health Fund. This fund will be featured in Give Fest on October 10, and donations made that day will be matched by the Heartland Community Foundation. Funds raised will directly support community health projects in Barton and Ellis Counties.
As we head into this new season, I encourage you to stay connected with our office, attend programs that interest you, and help us spread the word about the many ways K-State Extension is making a difference right here in our communities.
