Family and Community Wellness agent, Michelle Beran, finished up a 6 part series for the BCC Trio program with a session titled Adulting 101. This session covered topics such as understanding your paystub, types and reasons for carrying insurance, maintaining good credit, and using good resources for financial information. Key takeaways included “your financial history doesn’t have to be your financial future” and small habits that can make a big difference in the long run. This session included resources from the Consumer Fraud Prevention Bureau and FDIC. The participants completed a knowledge test with most scoring 80% or above.

The ServSafe Food Handler Certificate verifies basic food safety knowledge and includes an exam to verify that presented information is retained and can be put into practice by participants.

Michelle is finalizing details on a class to be held June 15 at the Cottonwood Extension Office in Great Bend in partnership with Rice County Extension. If you would like more information on this class, please contact her at mberan@ksu.edu.

ServSafe is important training for individuals in a variety of food-handling settings from schools to day cares to restaurants.

Celiac disease impacts many people and is widely misunderstood. Michelle was able to share both resources from the National Celiac Association and personal experiences with the 21st Century Night Owls EHU on April 27. The information prompted great discussion about effects of celiac disease as well as the struggles with diagnosis and cross contamination issues.

Several gluten free recipes were shared and Michelle’s Hearty Hash Brown Casserole is shared on the next page.
