March 2025
District Director Notes - Jay Harris
As the days grow longer and the temperatures begin to rise, we welcome the arrival of spring; a season of renewal, growth, and fresh opportunities. Whether you’re a gardener, a farmer, or someone who simply enjoys the outdoors, spring brings with it a sense of excitement and anticipation.
For our agricultural producers, spring signals the start of a new growing season. Fields come to life with the promise of crops, and ranchers prepare for calving and the fresh challenges that come with changing weather. It’s a busy time, filled with careful planning and hard work to ensure a successful season ahead.
Gardeners eagerly watch for the first signs of green as perennials begin to emerge and trees bud out. There’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of planting seeds and watching them grow, a reminder of nature’s resilience and beauty. Extension programs across the Cottonwood District will be offering educational opportunities on gardening, landscaping, and plant care to help both novice and experienced gardeners make the most of this season.
Spring also represents new beginnings in our communities. Schools are buzzing with spring activities, 4-H members are preparing for upcoming fairs and events, and families are spending more time outside, enjoying the fresh air and longer daylight hours. It’s a time of rejuvenation, both in nature and in our daily lives.
Just as the season brings growth to our fields and gardens, it’s also a great time to focus on personal and community well-being. Our Family and Community Wellness programs support individuals and families through mental health resources, stress management, nutrition education, and more. Whether it’s learning how to manage stress, build healthier habits, or strengthen family connections, spring offers a fresh opportunity to invest in our well-being.
At K-State Research and Extension, we’re excited for the opportunities spring brings to engage with our communities through educational programming, outreach, and support. Whether you’re looking for guidance on planting, livestock care, family wellness, youth programs, or community resources, our team is here to help.
Take a moment to step outside, enjoy the beauty of spring, and embrace the possibilities it brings. Here’s to a season of growth and new beginnings in the Cottonwood District!
