June 2025
District Director Notes - Jay Harris
County Fair Season is Almost Here – Come Be Part of the Tradition!
It’s almost that time of year again—fair season in the Cottonwood Extension District! Both the Barton County and Ellis County Fairs are just around the corner, and our staff, volunteers, and 4-H families are busy preparing exhibits, organizing events, and getting fairgrounds ready to showcase the best of our communities.
The Barton County Fair will be held June 25–29, and the Ellis County Fair takes place July 14–20. These county fairs are a time-honored tradition—an opportunity to celebrate agriculture, youth development, and community pride. From livestock shows and 4-H projects to food competitions, entertainment, and educational exhibits, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
It’s important to note that some events—such as judging contests, fashion revues, or horse shows—may take place outside of the main fair dates, so be sure to check the full schedule in each county’s official fair book. Fair books are available online and at your local Extension office.
Here’s how you can get involved:
• Attend the fair! Bring your family, friends, and neighbors to take in the sights, sounds, and flavors of the fairgrounds. It’s a great way to support our 4-H youth and see the hard work they’ve put into their projects.
• Enter open class exhibits. You don’t have to be a 4-H member to participate. Open class categories are available for baking, photography, quilting, gardening, and more. It’s a great way to share your talents with the community.
• Volunteer. Fairs run on the power of community involvement. Whether you can help set up, serve as a judge or superintendent, or lend a hand during events, we’d love to have your support.
• Support local youth. Attend the livestock sale, visit the 4-H project displays, or simply cheer on our young people as they present what they’ve learned. Your encouragement means the world to them.
The county fair is more than just an event—it’s a celebration of who we are as Kansans. It’s a chance to learn, grow, and come together. I hope you’ll join us at this year’s fairs and take part in the fun, fellowship, and community spirit that make these events so special.
