July 2025
District Director Notes - Jay Harris
In the coming weeks and months, you will begin to notice a small change with a big meaning. You’ll start to see us using the name… K-State Extension. While our mission and local presence remain the same, this updated name better reflects our connection to Kansas State University and our commitment to delivering research-based information that helps Kansans thrive.
As July heats up, so do the opportunities to put Extension knowledge into action. Whether you’re navigating garden pests, caring for your lawn during a dry spell, making healthier choices for your family, managing forage and livestock in a dry growing season, or supporting youth through 4-H development, K-State Extension is here with practical, research-based solutions.
Across the Cottonwood Extension District, our team of agents and volunteers continues to focus on meeting the evolving needs of our communities:
• Our multiple demonstration and educational gardens are in full bloom, showcasing drought-tolerant perennials, heirloom vegetables, pollinator-friendly plants, and sustainable practices. These spaces are more than beautiful, they are hands-on learning environments that inspire and inform.
• Family and Community Wellness programming this summer includes topics like stress management, healthy eating, and youth wellness, timely issues as families juggle busy schedules and changing routines.
• Agriculture agents are working one-on-one with producers on forage quality, herd health, and water resource management, helping to protect both livelihoods and land during this critical growing season.
• 4-H Youth Development agents are wrapping up a busy season of county fairs, recognizing the hard work and achievements of our 4-H members. The experiences these youth gain through project work, leadership, and community involvement are preparing them for bright futures.
July is a great time to slow down, take stock, and invest in what matters: health, family, community, and resilience. K-State Extension is here to support you in those efforts, all year long.
Enjoy the season, and as always, don’t hesitate to reach out to your local Cottonwood Extension District office with questions or ideas.
