January 2026
District Director Notes - Jay Harris
January brings a fresh start, a time to reflect on where we’ve been and look ahead to what’s possible. Across the Cottonwood Extension District, this new year begins with optimism, momentum, and a continued commitment to serving our communities.
Cooperative Extension exists to help people navigate change, make informed decisions, and strengthen their families, farms, and communities. That mission feels especially relevant as we enter a year filled with both challenges and opportunities. Whether it’s adapting to weather and market conditions, supporting youth development, or providing education that improves quality of life, Extension remains a trusted local resource backed by Kansas State University research.
The start of a new year is also a time for planning. Producers are reviewing cropping and grazing strategies, families are setting goals, and communities are identifying priorities for the months ahead. Extension plays a role in each of these areas: offering educational programs, one-on-one support, and practical tools tailored to our region.
In the coming months, the Cottonwood District will continue to focus on:
• Strong agricultural programming that supports producers and conservation efforts
• Youth development through 4-H, helping young people build leadership, confidence, and life skills
• Family and community education that promotes health, resilience, and informed decision-making
• Partnerships that strengthen local impact and keep Extension responsive to community needs
None of this work happens in isolation. It is made possible through the dedication of Extension staff, volunteers, advisory groups, and community partners who believe in the value of education and service. Your involvement; whether by attending a program, volunteering, or simply reaching out with a question, helps ensure Extension remains relevant and effective.
As we move into the new year, I encourage you to stay connected with the Cottonwood Extension District. Explore upcoming programs, share your ideas, and let us know how we can best serve you.
On behalf of our entire team, I wish you a safe, productive, and successful year ahead. We look forward to working with you in 2026.
