JAG Classes Begin

"Beginning in January, 4-H & Youth Development Agent Ben Sims was a guest speaker at the Great Bend High School JAG-K classes to discuss the importance of communication. JAG stands for Jobs for America's Graduates. The mission of the nationwide program is to empower our nation's young people with the skills and support to succeed in education, employment, and life. A mission we couldn't agree with more at the Cottonwood Extension District. Ben has been leading activities with Great Bend 9-12 graders about different modes of communication and the importance of understanding each, but also knowing your strengths in how you communicate. He has also discussed the importance of tailoring your conversations to your audience, initiating a proper introduction, writing an elevator speech, and saying thank you formally and informally. Ben is scheduled to visit the Great Bend Middle School JAG-K class at the end of the month, and two more visits with the High School. Is there something you would like Ben to come to your class and discuss? Then please feel free to reach out to him at benjam63@ksu.edu or at the office by calling 620-793-1910."

Over the past few months, Tamara Robertson, Ellis County 4-H Youth Development Agent, had the opportunity to work with four JAG-K classes at Hays Middle School, reaching a total of 57 students. Through three classroom visits, students participated in hands-on activities designed to build leadership and career-readiness skills. In October, students completed the 52 Card Pick Up activity while learning about leadership, teamwork, and positive self-talk. In November, activities such as the Handkerchief Knot, Gutter Ball, and Blind Shapes focused on communication and active listening skills. In December, students explored their values, interests, personality, and skills using Extension curriculum, by creating vision boards highlighting their long-term life goals. These interactive lessons helped students strengthen essential life skills while encouraging them to think intentionally about their futures.
