August 2025

District Director Notes - Jay Harris

You may have noticed our updated name: K-State Extension (formerly K-State Research and Extension). While our name has changed, our mission remains the same, bringing research-based information and programs to the people of Barton and Ellis Counties.

Across our district, our team works in several focus areas. Our Agriculture and Natural Resources agents are supporting farmers, ranchers, and landowners through a challenging growing season. 4-H Youth Development agents are wrapping up a busy summer of learning and leadership through local county fairs. Family and Community Wellness agents are providing education on health, childcare and personal finance. Community Vitality agents are working on ways to grow strong rural communities.

Behind all of these efforts are dedicated volunteers serving on Program Development Committees, or PDCs. These local citizens help guide the direction of Extension programming. The district has four PDCs made up of community members from each county who care about making a difference in their communities. The four areas of interest are:  Agriculture and Natural Resources, 4-H Youth Development, Family and Community Wellness, and Community Vitality.

A PDC provides feedback on what educational topics are needed locally and helps Extension agents stay connected to what’s happening in our communities. Members attend a few meetings each year and contribute their knowledge, experiences, and suggestions to help shape programming that truly matters.

If you're passionate about your community and want to help K-State Extension make an even bigger impact, consider serving on a Program Development Committee. Whether you're a parent, producer, small business owner, teacher, retiree, or simply a concerned citizen, we value your voice.

To learn more or to express your interest, contact either of the K-State Extension Cottonwood District offices in Great Bend or Hays. Your voice and ideas can help make a lasting impact on our communities.
