An educational place is how we develop one, sustainable, quality educational place. It covers a child’s journey, from the moment they wake up and includes: 4,719 EDUCATIONAL PLACES IN TOTAL - An inspiring, safe, learning environment; AT 2015 - Access to clean water, sanitation and essential healthcare; 7,519 (SINCE 2007) SO FAR ESTABLISHED 2016 PROJECTION - Community development including micro-finance, food security, farmer cooperatives and business development; and 10,519 - Pathways for a student after they finish Primary School (i.e. Secondary School, Vocational, or employment and affordable loans). 3 YEAR PROJECTION The total number of educational places is a rolling total, and we are confident that we will achieve our mission of creating 20,000 educational places by 2020. In 2015, we built several schools, worked with teachers to improve their qualifications, constructed toilet blocks, and installed clean drinking water sources at schools whilst also providing thousands of exercise books, textbooks and other educational resources. All of this helps to make these schools great places to learn! NUMBER OF SCHOOLS SUPPORTED PUPIL - TEACHER RATIO 2015 ACTUAL 2015 ACTUAL 14 2016 PROJECTION 16 3 YR PROJECTION 22 5 10 15 20 46:1 3 YR PROJECTION 46:1 25 10:1 Our support for schools includes many different components such as building classrooms, teacher training and salaries, student accommodation and educational materials such as textbooks and stationery. “WHEN I FIRST STARTED TEACHING, THE SCHOOL WAS NOT PERFORMING VERY WELL BUT IT HAS IMPROVED SIGNIFICANTLY AND IS NOW A BEAUTIFUL SCHOOL. THE STUDENTS ARE MOTIVATED AND ENJOY LEARNING, AND THE TEACHERS ARE HAPPY. I LOVE THAT I AM TEACHING TOMORROW’S DOCTORS!” 31:1 2016 GOAL 20:1 30:1 40:1 50:1 We achieved excellent pupil-teacher ratios in 2015, or number of students per teacher. We’ve already exceeded our 2016 goal of 46:1, which is the current average across Uganda (Source: World Bank 2013) and will work with the schools to ensure they maintain this, and provide children the highest quality education possible. NUMBER OF STUDENTS PROVIDED WITH MEALS AT SCHOOL 2015 ACTUAL 4,935 2016 GOAL 7,519 3 YR PROJECTION 10,519 0 1,000 2,000 3,000 4,000 5,000 6,000 7,000 8,000 9,000 10,000 11,000 Number of students provided with meals at school refers to those children enrolled in school who receive a minimum of one meal per day. Providing meals at school helps students stay energized and focused to learn, and prevents them from travelling large distances to return home for lunch each day. Anecdotal evidence indicates that children who walk home for lunch do not return to school for the afternoon. We work with the local community to manage the student meals process including growing, harvesting and preparing the food. KENNEDY SCIENCE TEACHER AT ST NICHOLAS PRIMARY SCHOOL, MANNYA VILLAGE. 18 19
