Heart work
After being made redundant from an IT project management role and then falling into postnatal depression , Nadia Butt attended an arts and crafts course that changed her life .
“ I had been feeling very isolated ,” she recalls , “ and I found a lot of support in that group .”
Butt went on to design her own course that incorporated elements of cognitive behavioural therapy ( CBT ) with arts and crafts . Each session was linked to a theme , such as transformation , and she would set the mood with candles and music .
When the pandemic curtailed in-person classes , Butt established Inner Canvas , a monthly craft therapy subscription box . Approved by a qualified CBT therapist , each box contains a wellbeing journal and the materials for a craft project , such as book binding , macrame , embroidery and more .
