Morgan Sellers has been in the wig and makeup program for two years. She came to UNCSA thanks to a history in dance--she’d been doing makeup and working with false lashes, and when she found the UNCSA program she knew it was a perfect fit. Here she is working on a Cyndi Lauper style wig for the school’s production of A Bright Room Called Day. Half of the wig is wefted, but the front and right side are fully ventilated so that it can later be shaved to create one of the pop star’s many iconic looks. Destinee Steele is a first year graduate student with the program. She loves doing hair and is actually a trained cosmetologist. She was working on setting a lace front wig with a roller set to perfect its 1930’s style. Carla H. McClain is a 1st year graduate student and cosmetology instructor who came to UNCSA to continue her education and get a head start in working in film and television. Her favorite piece that she’s worked on as a student was a Van Dyke style mustache and goatee. She noted that it was the first time she had created a piece like that and the work was fun and challenging. She started by ventilating both pieces and then she dyed the two to match the actor’s wig. Logan Elisabeth Hardy is another first year graduate student who found UNCSA after coming from a background of costuming. She had fallen in love with wigs and makeup and decided she wanted the MFA so that she could later teach. UNCSA won her over thanks to its combo of a comprehensive prosthetics education, film exposure, and the department’s encouragement that any opportunity a student might want for (academically) would be made available. Here she is working on ventilating a wig that will be used in The Drowsy Chaperone. The nape and edges of the piece will all be ventilated with a wefted center. She expects that overall the wig will take about 30 hours to complete. 73
