Events What the FDA’s CBD Hearing means for Beauty Early in May, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) held a CBD hearing in Washington, D.C. where CBD experts, as well as business owners specializing in the ingredient, spoke with the intent of sharing knowledge about the topic and, hopefully, for the FDA to consider better policies on CBD. As testimonies were given all day, one thing for certain about this hearing is the confusion the FDA has on this topic has increased more than before. CBD oil has been a growing industry, but a hesitant one as its association with marijuana and lack of knowledge made it illegal. But, the Farm Bill in 2018 made industrial hemp and hemp-derived products, like CBD, legal. But this was done with an exception to food, beverages, and dietary supplements, under the FDA; although they still can be purchased. Part of the FDA’s struggle with this topic is effectiveness, dosage, and long-term effects. Many companies producing the product are stating claims the FDA doesn’t deems provable. 18 C O S M O B I Z M A G A Z I N E The hearing ended with the FDA making zero progress, and only more questions to be raised about the topic. Here’s what it means for the beauty industry. The FDA will continue to hold off with backing CBD products in food and supplements until further study has been conducted. Also, don’t believe the hype with many CBD products coming on the market. Just like how the FDA doesn’t have thorough knowledge on the topic, most big conglomerates don’t either. They’re here to take hold of the trend. Pay attention to smaller businesses that are conducting research, giving you proper dosage, and also producing potent products.
