Treasurer’s Report by
Michael Butt
A financially successful year for Coschem,
having generated a surplus of just over
R400K. The NPO status requires that we
reinvest this surplus back into the Society in
projects which will benefit the members. This
surplus will be allocated accordingly.
Allocations will be divided between the
education programme, supporting students
to attend and present papers at the IFSCC
and further IFSCC Congress events.
As can be seen from the income statement all
of the Society’s activities again contributed to
the overall success, with the major
contributions coming from membership
subscriptions, the education programme and
conference earnings.
The membership has shown a small decline,
this is however a normal cycle, with
membership declining and increasing every
second year.

The course is still highly sought after with in
the industy. To the extent that the
IFSCC have approached us to utilize our
course content.
Some legal issues remaining from last year,
the Trademarks have been registered and
finalized. The defense against two students
was also resolved.
The Social Committee functions were well
supported during the year, with exception
of the men’s day which had to be canceled
due to lack of interest. The ladies’ day was its
usual success, I leave you to draw your own
conclusions.
The Scientific conference, gala dinner and
inaugural HPCI exhibition were a resounding
success and we look forward to another
successful event this year.
However, the membership requires constant
attention as we are not the only offering in the
area of education in the personal care
industry. Investments are making a surplus even after
the annual fees. They need to be monitored
and adjusted as necessary. Both Allan Gray
and Old Mutual gave positive growth for the
year.
I would like to thank all the companies and
individuals who continue their loyal support to
Coschem and we will continue to try and
expand the range of benefits available to
members. Overall I think the members can be pleased
with the performance of the Society in
difficult economic circumstance which are
making companies look twice at every cent
they spend.
The education programme has given cause
for concern as changes in the government
legislation now prevent NPO organization
from registering with the Department of
Higher Education and offering Diploma
course without appropriate status. In the
interim we able to continue offering the
course with a simple name change but in the
longer-term accreditation to the new
legislation may be required. Congratulations to all of the hard-working
volunteers and Bridget who continues to be
the glue that binds the Society together.
I regret due to work commitments I am no
longer able to continue in this post, but the
fresh perspectives of new people are always
welcomed.
Bridget’s workload at certain times of the year
is very high, for that reason we have decided
to look at an intern to take some of the strain
and provide some strength in-depth to the
administration.
