IFSCC Report 2017
Roy Gardiner
2017 was a busy year for the Praesidium and
the IFSCC as a whole. The year started early
with a Zone 1 (Europe) meeting held during
In-Cosmetics in London. Bridget and I
attended and it was very obvious that South
Africa needed to be part of the Praesidium.
In September a number of issues were raised
at the IFSCC Council Meeting prior to the
Seoul Conference. The two important issues
were the vacancy on the Praesidium and the
discontinuation of Conferences.
Regarding the vacancy on the Praesidium I
believe we should offer a delegate. A number
of our members were approached earlier in
the year to take up this position but
unfortunately for various reasons we could
not offer a candidate. Going forward it is
critical that this position is taken up by South
Africa as we need to support the IFSCC and
it may also have a bearing on future
Congresses which we may wish to host. The
second issue was that Conferences were
going to be replaced with Congresses from
2023. As we were planning to apply for a
Conference in 2027, we now need to
reconsider our options. We must send a
delegate to the Zone 1 meeting in 2018 to
negotiate this as not only have the
Conferences changed but the Zone 1 hosting
years as well. Philippe Auderset of the Swiss
Society voted on our behalf at the Council
meeting and I thank him for his assistance.
The Seoul Conference was very successful
and a “Golden Book” was given to all
delegates. This book contains the 22 papers
published since the 2016 Orlando Congress.
We were also given an electronic version
of this as well as being sent a copy for our
library. There were 800 paid delegates at the
Conference with almost half of them from
Korea. The pre-conference workshop had
119 attendees.
There were six keynote speakers, 325
posters, 23 exhibitors and 23 sponsors.
KOSMET is a continually updated database
purely and uniquely focussed on cosmetic
science and is of great value to researchers
and development chemists. A lot of effort has
gone into this database and it is now more
user-friendly than the previous version. The
new version was launched on 1 November
2017 and will be free for the next 12 months
to IFSCC and Coschem members. Free
access was made possible by the corporate
supporters of the new KOSMET database,
Pechoin and Greentech, and we thank them
for their generous support.
I was serving my second term as Honorary
Auditor for the IFSCC and during the year
a number of conference calls were held to
discuss the IFSCC finances. I am pleased to
report that the finances are well controlled
and are looking very positive.
Finally I would urge you to read the IFSCC
Newsletters, the IFSCC Magazine and to
visit the IFSCC website. The magazine is
part of the IFSCC website and is available at
no cost to all Coschem members.
