The Muslim Brotherhood has been a force in Egypt since 1928. Ever since Egypt became a republic, The Brotherhood has always against the government. In a sense it was like the Democrats versus the Republicans. The first four times Egypt needed a leader there would only be one candidate, but that changed in 2012. Morsi Mohamed, previously a Brotherhood leader, went up for election against Ahmed Shafik. With the strength in numbers The Brotherhood processes, their former leader won. They were thrilled that one of their men had taken the position and power of a much greater force.

Morsi had been in office for almost a year now. He had fired high ranked officers so he could have more power, so the government had to do something about it, "On July 3, 2013, Morsi was officially ousted as president by Egypt's armed forces. Following the army's announcement, which was televised, millions of protesters celebrated countrywide, reportedly shouting phrases like "God is great" and "Long live Egypt." (Mohamed Morsi Biography, 2014) With this done, Egypt has been left without a leader and the military was left in charge of the out of control country. The government needed to do something before things started to get worse.
