In an epic that lasted four hours, 59 minutes and required 14 innings, Wade Robinson ended the season with a single to right-center at 10 past midnight, scoring Jorge Cortes from second to give the Hooks the 2006 title. Robinson, who entered the game in the ninth as a defensive replacement at short, finished 3-for-3, his only hits in the post-season. The game featured dramatic and breathtaking twists and turns, none more memorable than the sensational sliding catch made by Cortes in shallow left in the top of the 11th to end the frame with the bases loaded and the score tied at 7. That play even trumped the triple play in the top of the ninth, when Josh Bonifay, playing first, made a shoestring catch on Alex Gordon’s line-drive smash. 136
