Starter Juan Gutierrez tossed six innings of two-hit, shutout ball and light-hitting
shortstop Osvaldo Fernando provided a two-out, two-run triple in the bottom of the
fourth to lift the Hooks in Game 1. The triple was Fernando’s first of the season. The
result signaled an about-face of the late-season trends in which the Hooks entered
the playoffs having lost seven of their last nine in the regular season, while Midland
had won 10 of its last 11 and 22 of its last 27.
