Granny’s Still Got
the Groove:
Bridging the gap between the
young and elderly
By: Katlego Maifadi
Grandparents of this century are definitely keeping up with the times and
ensuring that they do not become invisible to the world by just sitting at
home after their retirement. The elderly in the outskirts of Pretoria North are
doing extremely well in ensuring that they live it up and still give back to
the community. These women are ensuring that the children in their community stay away from the pressure caused by the dangers of the street
life. They emphasize the importance of mental and physical health. Not
only do they provide food for these children at schools, they also ensure
that the children stay fit by inviting the boys to practice with them every
week. This has respectively created a positive environment whereby these
elders are encouraging the teenagers’ dreams and aspirations.
