B runo’s and Igloo ice cream shops can be good examples of same businesses that have become really competitive. Bruno’s was opened about 7 years ago while Igloo is only a couple of years old. Both are ice cream shops that sell delicious and creamy ice creams. They are both located around Bole, one of the most popular hangout vicinities of Addis. Bruno’s was the first go to place to get the best ice cream in town with a fair price and big scoops. Ice cream lovers have always loved it for its cool and cozy vibe that is excellent to have ice cream in the sunny and very hot seasons. Years later, the biggest competitor, Igloo, came along the way and opened its shop about five minutes drive from Bruno’s. Igloo is a smaller shop in comparison to Bruno’s but they have enough packages to lure ice cream fans including the new flavors they introduced. Although Igloo’s price is a little higher and has smaller scoops than Bruno’s, people still prefer the new taste of Igloo ice cream. “It’s like you will never know something until you learn about it. Bruno’s has always been the best but now Igloo is even better!” says one Igloo fanatic. “I still like Bruno’s ice cream, especially the big scoops and the cozy vibe is way better than Igloo but still there is some- thing different about Igloo’s ice cream. It has a different taste to Bruno’s,” says another new Igloo fan who still likes Bruno’s bigger scoops. “They have delicious ice cream cakes. That is a very good variety, I guess. You may not want to have just ice cream all the time,” says another Igloo customer when explaining his reason of why he now prefers Igloo to Bruno’s. Even though people now prefer the different and better taste of Igloo, Bruno’s still didn’t run out of customers and they still run out of their special flavors on occasions and it is still that old and famous Bruno’s ice cream. But as for Igloo, it probably won’t run out of flavours and it sure is the new and famous creamy ice cream shop that ice cream fans never cease to go to even if it means standing a while in line in the small shop to get to the cashier. This is a mere indication that a business doesn’t have to be old and much experienced to be successful in a relatively short period of time. This small case scenario shows that knowing the customers need is the first rule of thumb for a new business like this. Igloo’s creativity and knowing the customers’ need for a different taste is what won the hearts of ice cream fans of Addis.
