CSI ADVERTORIAL CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY - PROFILE ANGLO AMERICAN Corporate social investment is at the heart of the way we do business at Anglo American and it is an important strategic focus for us as a South African mining company. We strive to become a partner of choice for communities associated with our operations by making a lasting positive contribution, and by going beyond compliance in everything that we do. We have spent over R929 million ($128 million) in social development in 2011, which was filtered into a number of developing countries throughout the world, including R509 million ($70.1 million) spent in South Africa alone. This spend was distributed over 10 key social development sectors, which include education and training, health and welfare, and community development, amongst others. Some encouraging statistics from our social development initiatives revealed that community development remained a major focus of the company in 2011 with over R370 million ($51 million) or 40 percent of total spend being filtered to high impact projects and communities. Equally important is the spend focused on education and training, which accounted for 22 percent of total spend or R209 million ($28.8 million).
