Every fight they take up to highlight oppression and the usurpation of power is a reminder that democracy can be eroded by unscrupulous people bent on profiteering from the sweat of a docile population. Their schemes must not work! taste perfection
The reaction by the Tanzania government was equally alarming, observers were termed as interferers of the internal affairs of another country yet they were not representing the accused but were in solidarity with a maligned democratic space warrior.
The Tanzanian president entered the fray and warned the activists whom she accused of spoiling their country, according to her, and attempting to export their liberal thoughts to a country pretending to be a democracy. They arrested the activists and deported them.
The arrest and deportation were not surprising, these are usual tactics of insecure leaders who use state machinery to suppress dissent and instill fear in the very people who they derive their legitimacy from, usually to cover up corruption.
What was surprising and equally alarming was our Chief Secretary’ s, also the Foreign Secretary, comments that castigated the activists rather than protest their treatment. This suggests that the Kenyan government supports oppression.
But we shouldn’ t have been surprised since Kizza Besigye, the Ugandan opposition leader was abducted from Kenya and delivered to a Ugandan court with the connivance of the Kenya government. Kenyan authorities support the oppression of Ugandan nationals.
Uganda even went as far as expressing disbelieve that an uprising like the one led by the Gen Zs was even possible to organize and implement, they offered the Kenya president support to eliminate such a threat in the future.
Kenya’ s recent history of seemingly illogical diplomatic gaffes seems to point to a tacit support of authoritarian governments in the region and abroad or acts that are designed to destabilize the free determination of the sovereignty of the people.
Kenya continues with its ambivalent stance on the sovereignty of Sahrawi and Somaliland and has ignited tensions amongst the protagonists by making statements that can only be construed as doublespeak and insincere.
Kenya’ s diplomatic ventures into DRC, Sudan and South Sudan have been unmitigated disasters since Kenya has positioned herself as a dishonest broker. One cannot oversee peace talks when the chair has a conflict of interest.
The running theme in all these interventions is that Kenya is sowing the seeds of discord rather that promoting peace. Somehow the chaos in those countries seem to benefit the interests of a certain cabal in Kenya.
A recent statement by one of the president’ s attack dogs that if the current administration loses the 2027 elections, they would go to jail, means that they know they are involved in criminal activities and vowed to do whatever it takes to stay in power.
Such a declaration is already an affront to democracy as it confirms that the government has ceased to be the servant of the sovereign, the people, and has put in place a mechanism of self-perpetuation by suppressing the independence of the democratic institutions.
Kenya continues to fuel instability in the region and to safeguard a thieving clique whose arrogance has been bolstered by the nonsensical broad-based government which is not only illegal but undemocratic. This is not a government for the people.
Kenya has been through this route before and it is worthy pointing out that in the final analysis it is not the constitution that is at fault but the tendency to elect rogues as leaders and magically expecting that they shall provide good leadership.
This government overstepped its bounds a long time ago when positions started being bought and money overrides the will of the people. Anyone in power soon realizes that he can secure his position with money. Kenyans are on sale.
Kenyan leaders want to have a government like the ones in the region, where leaders rule forever and create dynasties and to do this one habituates the people to suffering and the accepting government largesse to survive.
If the Kenyan populace allows the current administration the chance to consolidate power illegally, it will be impossible to dislodge them. As flawed as our country seems, it is still miles ahead of the neighbors. They must never ever be our benchmark of stability.
The supreme arrogance of the current regime needs to be constantly reminded that power derives from the people and we must support all those activists that are causing unease in the region. We owe our present freedoms to them and the future depends on them.
Every fight they take up to highlight oppression and the usurpation of power is a reminder that democracy can be eroded by unscrupulous people bent on profiteering from the sweat of a docile population. Their schemes must not work! taste perfection
