should there be more than three layers of management between an engineer working on a product and CEO Mark Zuckerberg.” Because of this flat organisational structure, each manager has a narrow span of control, ie, there are fewer subordinates accountable to him / her. Facebook’ s matrix form utilises decentralised decisionmaking and informal communication as there are no cubicles and walls in the office. In fact, CEO Mark Zuckerburg shares the same desk space as others in the Engineering Department. This allows for a feeling of freedom and autonomy within the workplace allowing the employee to share openly, criticism or dissent to the employer without feeling unfamiliar or unknown. However, businessinsider again quoted one employee as having said,“" At most companies, you put up a wall between a work personality and a personal one, which ends up with a professional workspace. Because the culture of Facebook implicitly encourages employees to " be themselves," the company lacks the " professionalism " found at other firms.” Another revealed,“" When you have huge rooms filled with rows and rows of picnic-style tables with people sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with 6 inches of separation and zero privacy, I am sorry... That ' s how you keep cattle in the pen, not high-quality talent earning low to mid six figures."
To communicate externally, Fortune. com found that Facebook still relies on email for external communications, such as the exchange of messages that brokered the interviews for much of the stories that allowed the writer to complete this essay. A notable point in the organisation’ s history that could be considered as a myth or a legend is Hollywood’ s portrayal of CEO Mark Zuckerburg and his associates in the 2010 film‘ The Social Network.’ According to theguardian. com, The Social Network suggested that Zuckerberg, played by Jesse Eisenberg, only created Facebook to attract women following a breakup. However, the tech mogul and young billionaire said that contrary to the film’ s plot he was not single at the time and had been dating Priscilla Chan, who is now his wife. Zuckerburg said,“ I think the reality is that writing code and then building a product and building a company is not a glamorous enough thing to make a movie about, so you can imagine that a lot of this stuff they had to embellish or make up. They went out of their way in the movie to try to get some interesting details correct like the design of the office, but on the overarching plot … they just kind of made up a bunch of stuff that I found kind of hurtful.” Today, however, Mark Zuckerburg, known by his staff as Zuck continues to build his empire as the hero of Facebook and is celebrated as a strong leader who pushes for an organisational culture that is young and performance oriented.
Conclusively, given the afore-mentioned body of knowledge Facebook seems to be poised to exist and grow well into the future. Over the next few years the company will make itself a cross-platform that allows developers to grow, build, and monetize their apps across every major mobile platform, will continue serving its existing communities and businesses and will take its next generation of services – Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and Search – to the level of becoming important businesses in their own rights( Majumdeer et al, 2015). This is largely due to its corporate culture and methods of organisational communication that is answerable to a clear and functional vision, requiring of a rigid employment system and facilitating of an arena of open communication.
