The State of Hunger in North Texas
Far too many neighbors in our community do not know where they will find their next meal . Today , there are nearly 700,000 people in North Texas that are experiencing hunger , including one in five children . Here at the North Texas Food Bank , we believe that is unacceptable .
The perception that hunger is a social issue affecting only the most vulnerable is no longer true .
Hunger exists in all zip codes and is found where you might least expect it , such as college campuses , corporate offices , childcare centers , and farming communities . Even before the pandemic , many of our neighbors were forced to make tough choices between buying food or paying for rent , utilities , medicine , or a visit to the doctor . No one should have to make these impossible choices .
About the North Texas Food Bank
Established in 1982 , the North Texas Food Bank ( NTFB ) was founded when community leaders Jo Curtis , Kathryn Walt Hall , Lorraine Griffin Kircher and Liz Minyard saw neighbors struggling to put food on the table . Today our critical work extends far beyond the early days of food banking ; closing the hunger gap requires strategic collaboration and innovation . Just as our founders envisioned 40 years ago , we can end hunger , but we cannot do this work alone .
NTFB distributes donated and purchased foods through direct feeding programs and a network of more than 400 food pantries and community organizations which are members of a diverse Feeding Network across 13 counties . Our partners make this nutritious food available to the neighbors they serve , enhancing our ability to directly distribute more healthy food to the communities where our neighbors experiencing hunger live and work .
Hunger is a complex problem , but a solvable issue , especially in a thriving area like North Texas .
NTFB is designated 4-Star Exceptional organization by Charity Navigator based on its governance , integrity and financial stability . NTFB is a partner food bank of Feeding America , the nation ’ s largest hunger-relief organization .
