Keeping the Food Cupboard Shelves Filled
The primary source of food for the Cupboard is Foodshare, the distribution center for food pantries and soup kitchens in Hartford and Tolland counties. Foodshare provides free food items from federal and state programs as well as the opportunity to purchase a limited number of other food items at a very reduced cost.
But Foodshare alone cannot meet the food needs of the Cupboard. We also rely heavily on the generous donations we receive from churches, civic organizations, and individuals. Currently we most need:
**Canned soup and Ramen noodles
**Boxes of macaroni and cheese
**Cereal, especially instant oatmeal
**Canned beef stew or hash
**Spaghetti sauce
**Canned pasta
**Jelly or jam
The Cupboard also receives produce, meat, and other refrigerated items from five area grocery stores: Walmart, Stop & Shop Rockville, Aldi's, Big Y Ellington, and Big Y Tolland. Cupboard volunteers pick up this food at the stores and process the donations back at the Cupboard.
Donations can be left at the Cupboard (3 Prospect) on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday mornings or at the Soup Kitchen (15 Prospect) any week day. Grocery store gift cards are also greatly appreciated. We purchase items we need that are not available from Foodshare or are not donated.
The Food Cupboard is run by a dedicated team of over 50 volunteers and is supported by the Cornerstone Foundation.

It is an ongoing challenge to provide the food assistance that The Cornerstone Food Cupboard distributes every week to its over 450 families and their over 1,200 individuals, all of whom meet the federal income requirements for food assistance. In a typical week we distribute over 2,750 nonperishable food items plus large amounts of produce, bread, and other refrigerated items such as milk and eggs.
