Remembering Helen
We all have been blessed by sharing time with Helen. She was very dedicated
and supportive of all the activities that go on at the Scots Kirk. Cheese lunches,
bazaars, B&B books, prayer groups, Open Church, marriage courses, Open Mic,
crèche, serving coffee, Bible readings, church walks, potlucks and BBQs. Her
soft loving presence always filled others with a sense of welcome and
acceptance.
Her cakes – whenever a volunteer was needed to bring a cake she preheated
the oven. Sunday mornings, she’d hum away in the kitchen baking a cake for
something coming up later that day. Her scones and her oatcakes were
perfection on earth.
Helen wasn’t someone to stand out in front or raise her voice to get attention.
She was quietly behind the scenes baking, cooking, setting up, taking down,
and washing up. She almost always stayed to the end until the lights were
switched off. She showed her love by smiling, inquiring, encouraging, listening,
touching your arm, or giving a hug. She softly emanated and transmitted to
others an acceptance, peace, comfort, wonder, trust and love.
One of the scriptures read at her funeral really stood out to me in a way that it
never has before.
I Cor 13 - 4-7: Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast,
it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily
