rammarians
ladies, on Friday,
provided a steely
tough opponent
for one of
Gibraltar's hopes in Europe. The
young ladies, who were just a
few weeks ago at the wrong end
of an 8-0 score-line played with
the type of determination and grit
expected from a team looking to
put the record straight.
Pressing the veteran Hawkes in
every zone of the field, the
Grammarians kept pushing
Hawkes back into their own area.
The veterans clearly frustrated as
they reacted to umpire calls and
the tough tackling, as the match
came to its final 15 minutes,
Grammarians winning also the
chase for the ball in most areas
giving Hawkes very little
possession.
With neither team scoring, the
saved penalty by Hawkes keeper
Chelsea Glover, who was playing
her first match after she was
injured in the previous match with
Grammarians, made her the hero
of the day. The young keeper
coming out second best when the
rebound was struck straight onto
her legs.
Hawkes, who had argued against
some of the umpires decision,
feeling short-changed in what
they believed should have been a
short corner, themselves had a
chance to score in the last minute
with a strike at goal going just
wide.
