THINGS BEING DONE TO REVERSE CURRENT DESTRUCTION

The current destruction has lead to innovative ideas on how to recreate coral reefs. There are several different kinds but the general purpose is to create a man-made habitat in areas away from natural reefs that provides the framework for new coral colonies to develop. They usually consist of materials that mimic natural coral like rocks, but in some cases abandoned ships, trains and cars are used once they have been thoroughly cleaned.1 There has been a new development in which metals like rebar are charged with low voltage electricity to create calcium carbonate and then coral is added. With these structures coral grows faster and can withstand warmer more polluted water.7 No matter what type of artificial reef is used it produces a home for the biodiversity that would otherwise die and creates a platform for coral growth.
