In the tradition of the old pioneer
days when people would travel great
distances to attend camp meetings for
religious reflection and salvation, two
such meetings continue here today. Salem
Campground, one of the South’s oldest
camp meetings, has been held every year
since 1828, except during the years of the
War Between the States. The Smyrna camp
meeting can be traced back to 1831. While
some still “camp” on these sites, these
meetings have become a time for rejoicing,
reflection and reunion. Enjoy worshipping
with friends and neighbors, singing old-time
gospel hymns and contemporary songs, and
sharing a traditional Southern meal – or two.
