Intrauterine Device An intrauterine device (IUD) is a small device that is inserted into the womb via the cervix. Different devices work in different ways. Some stop the sperm or egg from surviving in the womb, where as others prevent the egg from implanting. Some IUDs release chemicals, where as others don't. Home made IUDs can be traced back to the ancient Greeks, but it wasn't until the 1960s that medical IUDs were approved. (Fpa.org.uk 2010) (Funbuzztime.com 2015)
