“ Harvard? That’ s lovely, Jesse. But there’ s no way we could ever afford it.”
“ Harvard? That’ s lovely, Jesse. But there’ s no way we could ever afford it.”
Mrs Elzinga wasn’ t the first mother to express pride tempered with reality when her child was offered a place at university.
Luckily, the acceptance letter was accompanied by a financial aid package that threw the doors to Harvard wide open.
“ The financial aid from Harvard was partly a grant from their endowment( aka bursary) but also partly loans, which I began to pay back by working part-time throughout my undergraduate years.”
A second financial aid package( this time a scholarship from Rotary International) funded Jesse’ s postgraduate year at Oxford University.
After university, Mr Elzinga worked at Whitgift School, Croydon; St Edward’ s School, Oxford; Harrow School, and Reading Blue Coat School. Current position: Headmaster, Sevenoaks School.
We believe in the transformational power of bursaries, and we support over 65 students a year.
