Vaccines. When do you give them?
Parvo and Distemper at 9 and 14 weeks of age. Nothing else at this time. Period. PLEASE try to wait on Rabies until the pup is one year old. I know this is hard in some states. We NEVER recommend a pup under the age of 6 months receive a Rabies vaccine and DO NOT recommend any Fort Dodge brand vaccines.
Most states require rabies vaccine at 6 months and we understand and accept this.
After 1 year post puppy vaccines, you can do one more Distemper and Parvo. From there, a titer is done every 3-5 years to check immunity. *A vaccine schedule to follow will be given to you when you take puppy home. After the first year, it is unlikely that your pup will need anything more except the state required Rabies. (to help with this outdated state law, support the Rabies Challenge Fund at www.rabieschallengefund.org.
What vaccines to avoid?
As many as possible. We do not recommend Lyme vaccine for a list of reasons. Lepto - there are so many types of Lepto that the few that are in a vaccine are not worth the risk. KEEP IT SIMPLE: These Piebald gene, small white dogs can suffer badly from over vaccination (seizures, skin and ear problems, behavior changes just to name a few).
If you are confused about a vaccine someone is recommending, wait and think about it. If your pet does have a vaccine reaction, note it and insist your vet document it as well. But above all, NEVER give that type of vaccine again. STOP killing your dogs with vaccines. Make your choices wisely.
