Spaces & Places
Space is art that is 3 dimensional (not a painting that is drawn to be 3D, it is
physically in 3D). It could be in a form of a sculpture, diorama, tableaux, or an
installation.
Place is the location and site of where the artwork lies. Place could be site specific
or have site specificity, which are two different things. Site specific is the artwork
was only built to fit with the location they built it at and site specificity also does that
BUT it also uses the place with context in the artwork.
An example of a site specific artwork
would be:
Betsy Damon: The Living Water Garden. This
land art is site specific because it restores
polluted fields in mainland China with plants
that remove toxins out of the soil. The art is
specific to here because it has a role it can fulfill
in the place it is located at; it helps respond to
environmental problems and helps treat it.
An example of a site specificity artwork
would be:
Betsy Damon: The Living Water Garden 1998.
Land art created with toxin removing plants.
Christian Boltanski: The Children of Dijon. This
installation was held inside a church in the city of Dijon,
France and this is an example of site specificity because it
this artwork has a meaning, a very strong meaning in
this city. It was installed specifically for this city for
remembrance of children who passed away in Dijon.
Pictures of children were displayed on the walls and
children clothes were placed on the floor. The clothes
looked like coffins placed in perfect rows and there were
lights framing each picture on the walls that made this
installation seem like a prayer to all of the children who
passed away.
Christian Boltanski: The Children of Dijon 1986.
Installation created using ready-made objects and photographs.
