The Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA ) Safe Drinking Water Hotline
Drinking water , including bottled water , may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants . The presence of these contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk . In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink , the EPA prescribes regulations that limit the amount of certain substances in water provided by public water systems .
More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the Environmental Protection Agency ’ s ( EPA ) Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800- 426-4791 or visiting the website at www . epa . gov / safewater .
Ask The Lab - FAQs
Why does my water sometimes appear cloudy when I first turn on the tap ? This can be caused by tiny air bubbles in the water , and happens more often in cold weather . Once the water flows from the tap , it ’ s no longer under pressure and the air comes out of solution as bubbles . To test whether the cloudiness is caused by air bubbles , fill a clear glass with water and let it sit for a minute . If the cloudiness clears from the bottom to the top , rest assured this is air dissipating from your water .
Should I be worried about lead and my drinking water ? Arlington Water Utilities conducted two rounds of lead and copper testing in 2020 . The testing found one sample ( out of 100 testing sites ) above the EPA-mandated action level for lead or copper of 15 ppb ( parts per billion ) for lead . However , compliance is not based on single samples , it ’ s based on the highest 10 percent of results . Ninety percent of Arlington ’ s lead samples detected 1.203 ppb or less , which is well below the action level .
Arlington ’ s lead and copper testing frequency was decreased from every six months to a three-year schedule by the TCEQ because of its history of testing results registering well below established limits . The Lead and Copper Rule , a U . S . Environmental Protection Agency program , is designed to minimize lead and copper levels in drinking water to protect the public health . If present , elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems , especially for pregnant women and young children . Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components in service lines and home plumbing . Arlington Water Utilities is responsible for providing high quality drinking water but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components . When your water has been sitting for several hours , you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to two minutes before using it for drinking or cooking .
If you are concerned about lead in your water , you may wish to have your water tested . Information on lead in drinking water , testing methods , and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at www . epa . gov / safewater / lead .
Arlington Water Utilities produced 18,478,108,000 gallons of treated water for use by customers in Arlington in 2021 . The department reported a system water loss percentage of 12.63 percent , which refers to the amount of water lost due to leaks , water line breaks or other non-revenue water use .
The Arlington Water Utilities Laboratory is accredited by the State of Texas , Texas Commission on Environmental Quality , under the National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program ( NELAP ). NELAP accreditation standards represent the best professional practices in the laboratory industry .
Construction starts in 2022 on a new laboratory / maintenance facility at the John F . Kubala Water Treatment Plant and the remodeling of a mini-laboratory used during the treatment process . The $ 12.3 million project is an investment in the future of Arlington ’ s water . ( Rendering courtesy Jacobs Engineering Group )
