consumers and businesses in different markets . This was the place to learn about business building strategies and incorporating new areas into a practice from tried and true advice .
ADVOCATING FOR THE LAW
It ’ s not just the lawyers who are frustrated with bankruptcy law favorable to lenders . Stopping a legal injustice takes uniting and advocating for change . And it is easier than people think .
Being a national association NACBA and its members have a great ability to influence the legal landscape of consumer protection statutes and application of the bankruptcy code . Laws begin with advocacy on both the State and Federal levels . Attendees at NACBA ’ s San Francisco Convention listened to NACBA ’ s legislative director , Maureen Thompson , explain what bills are currently before Congress and what NACBA is doing about each them . Further , she also explained great ways to get involved such as Hill Day at Home where NACBA members bring the message of consumer bankruptcy to the ears of Congress while these representatives are in their home states . In other words , consumer bankruptcy stands to be changed by the active participation of consumer bankruptcy attorneys .
It does not stop with advocacy either . NACBA does amicus brief writing on issues important to consumer bankruptcy and looks for cases possibly to take on pro bono or just to submit an amicus brief which stand to create favorable consumer bankruptcy case law . Attendees at the Convention listened to the Amicus Project Director , Tara Twomey , discuss her aims about bankruptcy and encouraged NACBA members to be proactive in reaching out to her if they have a case that implicate student loan , tax , or courtrelated debt dischargeability as well as tort fears post discharge-arguing collateral estoppel or vesting cases where the lender has refused consent to a 363 ( f ) sale .
IT IS SUCCESSFUL WITH YOUR HELP
Bankruptcy often battles a stigma of failure . But NACBA works to overcome that reputation by identifying what consumer protections are important for people and small businesses battling debt . From building a better business to learning new laws to advocating for a better legal landscape NACBA ’ s 2016 San Francisco Convention was an interactive way to encourage consumer bankruptcy attorneys to get more out of their practices .
