The latest milestone in the construction of the £ 120m development has been achieved with the completion of its structural steel frame Comprising of 40,000 individual pieces of steel weighing a combined 3,800 tonnes , the key structures that will make up Phase One of Milburngate are now complete and visible on Durham City ’ s riverside .
Following a 54-week build programme , the steel frames of the office building , hotel , boutique cinema , retail and leisure units , as well as the three apartment blocks , are now in place ready for external finishing and interior fitout to take place .
The structural frame , which utilises 20,000 welded shear studs , is strengthened with 5,500 square metres of pre-cast concrete beams and supports over 100 flights of stairs through the development .
In the Summer of 2019 Wyn Construction Ltd speculatively tendered and won a £ 500,000 package of works for Tolent Construction on the former combined HMRC Passport & NS & I Office site called Milburngate . The first package of works was to deliver a concrete capping beam across the top of the contiguous piled concrete wall that was installed to retain Framwellgate Peth bank .
The true scope of the Milburngate scheme is truly impressive , comprising 450,000 sq ft of mixed use space ; 60,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space , with bars , restaurants and cinemas included in the offering ; 230,000 sq ft of Grade A office space ; 153 luxury apartments across 3 high rise blocks ; and a 92 bed Premier Inn hotel .
Wyn Construction Ltd have shown true dedication and commitment to the project with over 80 operatives working on site at any one time , totalling over 150,000 man hours during which some 10,000m3 of concrete has been placed with a material purchase cost in excess of £ 1m .
The capping beam installation has proved a real success being delivered on time and within the budget and a strong relationship was forged between the Tolent management team and Wyn team lead by
Roy Bainbridge ( Contracts Director / Owner ) Michael Snowdon ( Contracts Supervisor ) and Michael Shanley ( Commercial Manager ).
This flourishing relationship has opened the door to Wyn Construction Ltd securing further works packages over the proceeding 18 months which now have a combined value in excess of £ 10 million .
