Construction View Issue 39 2021 | Page 23

Originally built in the 1930 ’ s to the design of Sir Giles Gilbert Scott , this iconic London landmark is the largest brick building in Europe . Battersea Power Station was built in three phases over a period of 20 years but was eventually decommissioned between 1975 and 1983 and abandoned to the elements until 2014 . It gained Grade II listed building status in 1980 and was upgraded to Grade II * in 2007 .
For Adrian Paye , CEO and founder of Paye Stonework and Restoration , his personal history with Battersea Power Station spans some 35 years , when in 1986 he was first instructed to organise cleaning samples to the brick facades , and offer advice on the mortars which had been used . More recently , Paye Stonework have been on site since 2013 , and have carefully cleaned the facades to remove a range of harmful pollutants and matching the mortars and the blends of bricks for each respective phase of repair and adaptation works , including repairing and adapting the embedded steel frame .
Working closely with mortar manufacturers and the original Battersea brick manufacturer , an extensive sampling process through to heritage approval was undertaken to ensure the blend of materials were absolutely correct and some 21 different colours of bricks have been used , ranging from orange to pink , from red to brown .
The scale of works to the façade included the formation of new window openings and restoration of existing window openings to suit the new units . New curved brickwork collars to the base of the iconic Battersea chimneys were constructed to replace the originals , which were removed during the new chimney construction , in addition Paye constructed an entirely new brickwork parapet to the west elevation .
Battersea Power Station is one of the most recognisable buildings in the UK , with it ’ s incredible 4 chimneys and cathedral like facades , it has been a true highlight to have been entrusted with its restoration .
