66 Kennedy Way Hub

KENNEDY WAY HUB

The Kennedy Way Hub in West Belfast seeks to modernise the wastewater infrastructure in Northern Ireland .
Situated on the former Kennedy Way Waste Water Treatment Works ( WWTW ) site , this ambitious project will see the creation of cutting-edge Mechanical and Electrical ( M & E ) workshops , storage facilities , changing rooms , and ancillary office spaces . The 3.8-hectare site , which has remained mostly unused since 2000 , will soon be revitalized to support critical infrastructure upgrades while fostering economic growth .
The Kennedy Way WWTW has a long history , having first been operational in the early 1900s . Decommissioned at the start of the new millennium , the site has since stood dormant , its key components lingering as remnants of the past . Now , with planning permission granted by Belfast City Council , Northern Ireland Water aims to breathe new life into the location , transforming it into a vital hub for the city ’ s Living With Water Programme and Belfast Strategic Drainage Infrastructure Plan .
Central to the Kennedy Way Hub is its role in facilitating the redevelopment of the Belfast Wastewater Treatment Works at Duncrue . As part of this broader upgrade , the existing facilities at Bretland House must be cleared to allow for the extension of the Belfast WWTW and the diversion of an Inlet Sewer .
The project undertaken by Main Contractor , Lowry Building & Civil Engineering , will provide a modern base for 32 management staff and 67 operatives currently stationed at Bretland House , ensuring continuity of operations while unlocking the potential for critical infrastructure improvements at Duncrue .
It will feature three main structures , including a primary hub building that will house the M & E workshops and office spaces . Additional facilities include a storage unit for an alternative bottled water supply and a generator store to ensure operational resilience .
