The project eliminates a 35 km stretch of substandard single-carriageway road , creating a seamless and modern link between Dublin and Westport .
Wider , safer carriageways , pedestrian and cyclist-friendly features , and reduced traffic in bypassed towns will contribute to a safer and more pleasant travel experience .
It is also envisaged that shorter commute times , lower transportation costs for businesses , and enhanced access to local attractions will drive economic growth in the region .
The project employs the Public Works Contract for Civil Engineering Works , under which Wills Bros . Ltd . will undertake both the detailed design and construction . Preparatory works , including utility diversions , have already commenced .
Charles Wills , Managing Director of Wills Bros . Ltd ., said : “ As a family-run company with over 50 years of civil engineering experience , we take great pride in delivering high-quality infrastructure projects .
“ The N5 project represents a significant responsibility , and we are dedicated to completing it to the highest standards , ensuring its transformative impact on County Roscommon and beyond .”
Beyond improving connectivity , the project will deliver lasting benefits to local communities . The bypassing of towns like Frenchpark , Bellanagare , Tulsk , and Strokestown will reduce traffic congestion and enhance the appeal of these areas for visitors .
Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council , Cllr . John Keogh , highlighted the broader impact , commenting : “ Our county ’ s central location will be significantly enhanced by this project , making Roscommon an even more attractive place to live , work , and invest .
“ This road will not only serve as a vital transport link but also as a driver of economic and social development .”
