FORTH MEADOWS COMMUNITY GREENWAY

John McQuillan Contracts are proud to have been the main contractor responsible for delivering the Forth Meadow Community Greenway . This EU PEACE IV funded project has transformed north and west Belfast by connecting communities along a 12 kilometre route from Clarendon Playing Fields to the new Transport Hub .
Our role in this project focused on much more than just building infrastructure . We worked to create a shared space that encourages community cohesion and provides a safe , accessible environment for all . This involved constructing new pathways , installing street furniture , resurfacing walkways , and adding wayfinding signage across several key sites , including the now fully revamped Springfield Park .
Transforming Key Areas of the Greenway
The Forth Meadow Community Greenway is made up of five distinct sections , each with unique challenges and features . In the Glencairn Park to Forthriver Linear Park section , we installed new paths , lighting , and refurbished a key footbridge . This made the parks more accessible and welcoming for local communities .
The Ballygomartin Road to Springfield Road section includes the development of Springvale Park . Here , we constructed a raised walkway over wetlands , which connect to Paisley Park . Moving into the Springfield Park to Falls Park section , a new bridge across Springfield Dam , strengthens connections between communities .
At Bog Meadows Nature Reserve , we upgraded pathways and added new lighting , ensuring minimal disruption to the natural environment . The final section , from Westlink to the city centre , involved the installation of new wayfinding signage , helping guide walkers and cyclists into Belfast ’ s core .
Health and Safety Commitment
Throughout the project , safety remained our top priority . As a registered contractor with the Considerate Constructor ’ s Scheme , we adhered to strict safety protocols , regularly conducting audits to ensure high standards were met . Detailed Risk Assessments and Method Statements ( RAMS ) were carefully developed for each phase of work , particularly in sensitive areas like rivers , ponds , and contaminated ground . Site boundary fencing and safety measures were implemented to ensure the protection of both the environment and the public .
We also created safe pedestrian diversion routes , installed new lighting , and introduced gradual gradients to improve accessibility for all greenway users .
Sustainability and Environmental Care
Sustainability was integral to our approach . We operated under an NIEA approved Construction Environmental Management Plan and monitored noise and vibration near residential areas to minimise disruption . Site won materials were reused in our landscaping efforts , and recycled asphalt pavement ( RAP ) was integrated into the new bituminous base , helping reduce the environmental footprint .
