16 Overbury - The Old Building Refurbishment
The Old Building , a symbol of LSE ’ s storied past , has long been integral to the institution . However , inconsistent maintenance over the years has left some areas in need of modernisation . This project seeks to address these issues , creating an upgraded academic environment that can stand proudly alongside the school ’ s many new , state-ofthe-art facilities .
A major focus of the refurbishment is improving the student and staff experience , not only by enhancing the building ’ s appearance but also by creating a functional , comfortable , and sustainable environment . The project spans several levels- 2 , M2 , 3 , M3 , 4 , 5 , and 6 - with spaces on these floors being brought up to modern standards through the upgrading of building components , finishes , and services .
One of the key aspects of the project is the school ’ s commitment to decarbonisation . LSE has set marketleading zero-carbon targets , and the Old Building refurbishment is a crucial part of that mission .
The project includes a comprehensive electrification plan designed to reduce carbon emissions significantly . By integrating state-of-the-art heat pump technology , the building will achieve a 70 % reduction in carbon emissions , moving it toward cleaner , low-carbon heating operations . In addition to heating upgrades , the project will incorporate mechanically ventilated heat recovery units . These systems are designed to minimise heat losses , ensuring that energy is used efficiently throughout the building . This not only enhances sustainability but also contributes to creating a comfortable internal climate for building occupants .
Another major component of the refurbishment involves the lighting systems . As part of the upgrade , 75 % of the existing lighting will be replaced with highly efficient ,
