Construction Middle East: Arabian Civil Engineers by GineersNow GineersNow Engineering Magazine Issue No. 014, Sau | Page 25
Among all the projects, creating
real-time simulation from 2D
drawings into 3D space was one of
the biggest achievements that Billy
and his team had accomplished.
(3D drawings and 3D simulations
were not new ideas to the civil
engineering industry. However,
able to predict the movement of
every corner or points on the
vehicle along a maneuverable path
was a new idea to the industry.)
The sale of this new software
generated approx. $800,000 CDN
for the first 6 months. Not only did
it generate a big revenue return for
the company, the team also
applied for a patent on the idea
and technology. This further
reinforced Billy’s belief that
innovation is the key to success.
After the success of the new
software, Billy decided to go to
Hong Kong and start engaging the
renovation sector with the idea to
bring in new innovations and
technology into the industry. With
Hong Kong being the entry point
towards
the
big
Chinese
manufacturing hub, it provides an
amazing playground for Billy to
test out. However, the pace of the
renovation industry in Hong Kong
was a constant race. No one would
like to stop and evaluate if there is
a more effective or innovative ways
for certain application. After two
years in the industry, he had to
throw in the white towel.
Shortly after closing that door,
there came another opportunity.
Connections from the past linked
Billy with a few enthusiastic
mechanical engineers who invited
him to be part of a start-up. And
that’s the birth of Prime Mech
Tools Ltd. with Billy being the sales
manager for the company. He was
able to use some of the
background from his first job at
UBC
Utilities
to
engage
customers. And his experience
with going to tradeshows was a
plus and this made him the
ultimate planner for exhibitions.
Not to mention, the connection
and know-how with the Chinese
manufacturers allow him to
approach different manufacturers
to make the dual-gear dual-blade
cable cutter a reality. After one year
of prototyping and testing, the
product was ready to be
showcased at exhibitions and has
been backed with lots of support
and positive feedbacks from
companies in different regional
markets. With the main market in
the United States, this product has
also debuted in Middle East and
Japan.
Billy explained, “The success of
the product was not an accident. It
was the combination of a great
idea, the smooth process of
prototyping, the contribution of the
marketing and branding team and
of course the dedication from the
sales team as well. Our dual-gear
dual-blade cutter for the power
and distribution sector is the first
of its kind in the market and is
protected by a patent that we hold.
Not only do we focus on the
portability and durability of such
cutters, we also focused on the
safety of the users. We have
equipped the latest models 12-080
and 12-100 with a wired remote
control so that the user do not
have to stand next to the high
voltage cable while cutting.”
“There have been lots of positive
feedbacks during the exhibition.
The most important thing we do at
Prime Mech Tools is to listen to our
clients and potential clients on
what their needs are. And we will
focus on helping to resolve their
challenges.”
“It is always the innovation that can
carry a company to another level,”
as explained by Billy. “We are
looking forward to more new and
innovative ideas to serve the
power and distri bution sector.”
