Specify how votes are made ( vote by ballot is recommended ) and who gets how many votes . If someone needs to have attended a certain event to get a vote , make sure you write that down ! Specify how the winner is determined . There are many voting systems , and you should look into the options to decide what ’ s best for your JCL . Here are some examples : ω The NJCL uses plurality voting , where the candidate with the most votes wins . ω The NJCL used to use majority voting , where a candidate must get more than 50 % of all votes to win . Since this can easily cause vacancies with more than two candidates , you ’ ll need to eliminate some at your Nominations Committee meeting so that only two are on the final ballot . ω You can use ranked choice voting , where candidates list their votes in order of preference . When counting the votes , you eliminate the candidate with the least votes , move each of those votes to their voters ’ second choice , then repeat that process . Look for the candidate that now has the least votes , eliminate them , move their votes to their voters ’ next choices , etc .
Removal from Office
Ω Include who can request that an officer be removed . Ω Include who ’ s part of the final vote on removal . Ω Ensure that the officer in question has a chance to give a defense . Ω Overall , make your removal procedure clear and specific .
Vacancy in Office
Ω Like with removal , have a clear and specific vacancy procedure . Ω Consider having a different procedure depending on the office that ’ s vacant
( e . g ., President vs . not President ). Ω Consider having a different procedure for vacancies that occur due to no candidate winning an election .
Ω Make sure to consider how vacancies could affect eligibility requirements . If someone is President for only half of the term , what does that mean for them , their local chapter , etc . at the next election ?
