Having a purpose in life appears to be a pre-condition for human happiness. Besides having a purpose there is a sense of achieving goals that is also possibly necessary for that momentary happiness to become a consistent feeling. Beings with purpose or with set goals in mind, who are constantly progressing, obtain a connection with the meaning of their lives.
So, what are goals and is it even necessary to reach them in order for joy to unfold? A goal is a desired result. Those beings with no desires are free from the ups and downs of success and failure. But any being with any sort of desire essentially experiences a need to have that desire fulfilled at which point basically a goal is set. Then it is the being's choice to either relinquish that desire or pursue that goal. One thinks thoughts and takes actions to become actively involved in the pursuit. Sometimes there are very few or even no
obstacles along the way and sometimes many obstacles arise. There is joy in feeling like everything went smoothly without a hitch as if the universe itself wanted it to be and also joy in feeling like no matter what the obstacle there was nothing that was able to stop such strong desire.
Now when the fulfillment of desire is experienced, usually one is happy and content but at times, instead, one has thoughts of regret or even a lack of fulfillment as if it was all a waste of time. As well failure to achieve a goal can lead to tremendous sadness and despair, but also sometimes that failure is the start of later great achievements.
So, how does one know what is an unworthy or unrealistic goal compared to a worthy or realistic one? If one has un-relinquished desire there will be a lack of peace until either detachment or fulfillment is found. If one attempts to comprehend all of the desires of the beings just on this planet let alone in the universe one might come to the conclusion that individual goals are somewhat meaningless in the grand sphere but ultimately meaningful in the personal sphere. One might also determine that simple goals are more quickly and readily achievable. And while complex
