Scientists link the opposite feeling we get in winter months to seasonal affective disorder, or S.A.D., a mood disorder in which people with normal mental health throughout the rest of the year experience depression during winter. I think the heavy clothing of winter coupled with the nuisance of maneuvering in inclement weather can feel oppressive. Unless we are masters of making the most of our time, we can often feel stuck indoors with nothing to do but think about how we wish life was better.
But our problems don’t go away just because the daffodils have begun to bloom. It seems that sunny weather brings about a sunny disposition. Spring, after all, represents rebirth. We spring clean, clearing out the old to make room for the new. We take a break during spring to celebrate its arrival. We even turn our clocks forward (most of us) to spring into the future as though we can’t wait for what’s in store for us. Love even seems to be in the air during spring time. Studies have shown that both animals and humans experience a higher level of conception during this time.
All of these things, however, can occur any time of the year if we choose to live life more mindfully. When we learn to make snow bunnies or dance in the rain, or to admire the periwinkles which grow year round, we can stop being S.A.D. and catch “spring fever” throughout every season. We have just become
accustomed to certain traditions occurring during certain times. But finding joy in life, looking forward to the good that is to come, and taking time to enjoy the beauty that surrounds us is the definition of “joie de vivre”.
There is beauty on this planet year round and love certainly does not have a season. Spend time with loved ones or even alone finding magnificence in the clouds, splendor in the rainbows, or comfort in the arms of your beloved…or yourself! Indulge yourself in a cup of rich creamy hot chocolate and gaze at the majesty that surrounds you. Try to find as many simple or extravagant ways to show love to your family friends, that special someone, and YOURSELF.
But since it is spring time right now, get outdoors and enjoy the many flowers in bloom, bask in the sunshine, or have long luxurious meals with pals who are also emerging from hibernation. Spring is the best time to rediscover your “joie de vivre.”
