TEACHER TIPS
effective — be open about your requirements and boundaries for the work , and then embrace what students create .
• Think creatively about ways to assess how the sense of belonging is experienced in your community . Small group conversations and semi-structured interviews allow for multiple stories to sit alongside each other . Additionally , creating intentional opportunities to gather around meals has the potential to break down barriers and explore shared rituals and traditions .
As we reflect on these strategies , we could consider what author Brené Brown suggests . She states : “ Fitting in is about assessing a situation and becoming who you need to be to be accepted . Belonging , on the other hand , doesn ’ t require us to change who we are ; it requires us to be who we are .” What a feeling it is to be able to show up just as we are , where every person can be their authentic selves and not leave the most interesting and contributive parts of themselves away from the community . •
