CONNECTIONS QUARTERLY SUMMER 2022
WELCOME
BROADENING DEIB WORK
School communities have a number of wonderful annual events in the calendar — things such as prom , stone soup , or graduation . These events can be an important element in the life of the school community . But these annual events do not permeate the day-to-day life of the school .
A school ’ s approach to equity , inclusion , and belonging can be like — or maybe even literally — an annual event . A school may have an annual assembly and / or service day around Martin Luther King Day . Days such as this are not bad , and like graduation can be an important element for a school community . But if a school has nothing more than a couple of big events celebrating diversity , genuine progress toward equity and inclusion are unlikely to occur .
Occasional recognition of DEIB works as well as a few trips to the gym each year . Achieving and maintaining a healthy body requires regular and comprehensive oversight of our diet and exercise . In the same way , school communities marked by belonging and justice require regular work that permeates the campus . This edition of Connections Quarterly provides a few examples of how educators are intentionally promoting equity , inclusion , and belonging in what may be unexpected areas of school community . •
